 The German Wine

Most of the German wines are produced in the southwest of Germany, along the river Rhine and its streams together with its oldest plantation since the Roman period. It is about 60 percent of the German wine production is located in the federal state of the Rhineland-Palatinate where there are about 6 of the 13 regions for the best wine is nestled. What makes the country of Germany as the ninth largest wine producing country in the whole world since it has about 102, 000 hectares of vineyard where they can produced of about 9 million hectoliters every year which is equal to 1.2 billion bottles.

Furthermore, Germany produces different styles of wine such like dry, semi-sweet and sweet wines, red wines and sparkling wines which are called Sekt and rose wines. And because of its northerly location particularly the German vineyard, Germany produces wines compared to any others in Europe which are various outstanding qualities. However, despite all these the wines in German is still widely known abroad for being cheap, semi-sweet, low-quality mass-produced such like Liebfraumilch and sweet. Historically, the wines in Germany are predominantly white and the known as finest one is from Riesling. The wines in Germany recently are made of white wines which are made in the dry style. In fact, most of the wines being served in the Germany’s restaurants are dry.

However, red wines in Germany are hard to produce because of its climate and within the past years it was usually in light colored who is closer to rose or such like the wines of the Alsace. But, in this recent time there is great increased demand of darker and richer red wines which are produced from grapes like Dornfelder and Spatburgunder which is the German name of pinot noir. And because of its northerly climate which is mentioned above, there has been a great search for suitable grape varieties and there are many crosses have been increased such like Muller-Thurgau within the Geisenheim Grape Breeding Institute in Germany.
